Nancy Clayton is a watercolor artist living and painting in Seneca, South Carolina. She studied artistic anatomy and drawing in New York, NY at the Art Student’s League, with the renowned drawing instructor, Robert Beverly Hale. She then studied architecture at Rice University in Houston, receiving Bachelor of Art and Bachelor of Architecture degrees. She practiced architecture briefly, but set aside professional activities to raise her son Andrew. She resumed drawing and painting in the 1990’s and has since focused on watercolor painting. She has exhibited work at juried shows in South Carolina, including annual exhibitions of the South Carolina Watercolor Society. Her painting “Practice Lights at Sirrine” received the Best of Show award at the 2005 Claude Smith juried art exhibit of Upstate Visual Arts, in Greenville, SC.

Clayton’s painting illustrates the strong influence of her classical training in drawing. She prefers to create compositions from drawings and imagination rather than from photographs. Many of her paintings reflect her architectural background with a strong representation of three dimensional- space.

Clayton is a “Member with Excellence” in the South Carolina Watermedia Society.
